Qigong, pronounced “chi gong,” was developed in China thousands of years ago as part of traditional Chinese medicine. It involves using exercises to optimize your life force energy (chi) within the body, mind, and spirit, with the goal of improving and maintaining health, well-being and balance. Qigong has both psychological & physical components and uses movement, breath, self-massage, sound, visualization and mental intention to balance and harmonize the flow of qi in the body. In this way, it can serve as a form of active meditation. In most forms of qigong: Breath is slow, long, and deep. Breath patterns may switch from abdominal breathing to breathing combined with speech sounds. Movements are typically gentle and smooth, aimed for relaxation. Mind regulation includes focusing one’s attention and visualization. Dynamic (active) qigong techniques primarily focus on body movements, especially movements of the whole body or arms and legs. Meditative (passive) qigong techniques can be practiced in any posture that can be maintained over time and involve breath and mind exercises, with almost no body movement (NCCIH, NIH). Yoga is an Ayurvedic Indian system of purification and energy cultivation that transforms the body, mind and spirit into a state of self-realization. Today styles of yoga are so diverse that it is useful to divide the practice into two energetic categories: Yang Yoga and Yin Yoga. The goal of yoga and qigong is ultimately the same – to nourish and cultivate the life force energy of the body, mind and spirit.
